WATER OF LIFE
Thika Water of Life Project for 20,000 People
Through the EABL Foundation, a Kshs. 4 Million-water project, for the Gakoe community of Wepma in Thika district is up and running and benefiting over 20,000 people in the area.
The Water of Life project facilitated by AMREF has given 20,000 people of Wepma access to clean water through the construction of a water gravity scheme and five shallow wells.
EABL partnered with AMREF to manage and facilitate the project. AMREF worked very closely with the local community in developing and constructing both the wells and the gravity scheme. AMREF also trained the local community on how to operate and maintain the wells for the future. |

In the past, the community in Wepma has had very poor access to clean water. Many people – particularly women, had to walk up to 6 km a day to collect water from rivers and streams which were unprotected and open to pollution. With easy access to water, there will be more time for income generating projects, farming and education. The general health of the community is set to improve, as water borne diseases relating to typhoid, diarrhea and amoebiosis decrease.
