UBL Donates UGShs 8,457,000 to Bee keeping project

Uganda Breweries Limited has donated UGX 8,457,000 towards the purchase of hives and training equipment for bee farmers. The project dubbed Hives Save Lives aims to establish a demonstration and training site for bee farmers throughout Uganda.

Speaking during a recent visit and cheque presentation in Mpigi, (about 20 Km from Kampala) UBL’s External Affairs and Communication Director, Brenda Mbathi said that the Company was pleased to be part of the project and expressed optimism that the larger community in Mpigi would be strengthened through promotion of income generating activities and education. “I am pleased to learn that members of Mpigi are going to greatly benefit from the sponsorship and it is my hope that once the hives are up and running many lives will be transformed from this new method  of income generation for the area.

The Hives Save Lives project aims at strengthening communities by promoting income generating activities and education. The organization also seeks to ensure producers are assisted with processing and marketing of their products and it will introduce them to existing support organizations such as the Uganda Honey beekeepers Association and the Uganda National Apiculture Development Organization.

Speaking while receiving the cheque, the project’s patron, Brian Mugisha thanked UBL for their continued support in community projects. “With UBL’s sponsorship, we are now well prepared to realize the full potential of an apiary equipped with modern hives and to ensure that training is passed down to the rest of the community members. The funds will help purchase over 60 hives for beekeepers and equipment such as gloves, boots, buckets and bee veils among other items”, said Mr Mugisha.

Ms. Mbathi appealed to other corporates to join hands in assisting communities with other similar income generating activities. “We have a social responsibility to raise the quality of life of the communities in which we operate and from where we draw our consumers and suppliers.  I am very pleased that UBL, through the Hives for Lives Project will make a positive impact on the community of Mpigi. We will continue to fund community projects across Uganda”, said Mrs. Mbathi.
