UBL DONATES USHS 22.5 MILLION TO CONSTRUCT A BOREHOLE IN EKITANGAALA FISH FARM IN NAKASONGOLA

2nd March 2006 - Uganda

UBL's External Affairs and Communication Director, Brenda Mbathi presents a cheque to Ekitangaala Fish Farms Project's Patron, Rand Blair towards sinking a borehole in the farm. The borehole will supplement the water needs of the community members within the area situated in Nakasongola.

Uganda Breweries Limited, (UBL) through the EABL Foundation has donated Ushs 22,541,000 to help construct a borehole in a fish farm in the Nakasongola community.

Speaking during the cheque presentation at the Company’s plant in Portbell, UBL’s External Affairs and Communication Director, Mrs. Brenda Mbathi said that the Company was delighted to fund the project as it was in line with the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility. “I am very pleased that members of the Ekitangaala community will greatly benefit from the borehole and it is my hope that once the borehole is operational, many lives will be transformed by the improved access to clean, safe water for the community”, said Mrs. Mbathi.

The Ekitangaala fish farm provides homes, and health facilities to Katooge sub country, one of the areas hardest hit by poverty in Uganda.

Speaking while receiving the cheque, the project’s patron, Mr. Rand Blair thanked UBL for their continued support in community projects. “We thank Uganda Breweries for enriching the lives of the members of Ekitangaala through the donation. He added that the borehole was important, as it was required to supplement the water needed for the local community in addition to the annual supply needed for the Ekitangaala fish project. The fish farm raises much needed revenue for the community through the breeding and sale of fish for Nakasongola and other markets.

Mrs. Mbathi said UBL would continue its commitment to fund community projects. “At UBL, we believe we have a social responsibility to raise the quality of life of the communities in which we operate and from where we draw our consumers and suppliers.  By funding a borehole within the Ekitangaala Fish Farm, we will help the community in a very real way.  UBL will continue to fund projects that make an impact and improve the lives of the Ugandans especially in the area of health, education and access to clean water’, stated Mrs. Mbathi.

Water is life. There are many communities in East Africa that have no access to clean, safe water.
