EABL Green Goals Launch
25th June 2008…Climate change has increasingly become a concern both at a local level and globally. Companies and businesses across the globe are taking stock of the impact they make on the environment.
It has become imperative that companies access and analyze their operations and their overall impact on the surrounding environment. Business must take a major step in ensuring that resources are managed efficiently as possible to ensure a sustainable future.
With this in mind, East African Breweries has embarked on an ambitious environmental program that will see it reduce its carbon footprint significantly in the next 2 years.
Dubbed Green goals, the company has made commitment to adhere to strict environmental goals that will be measurable.
The project will involve reduction of energy usage at the EABL facilities, work to prevent pollution, minimize the environmental impact of all products and operations and corporate with other industry players and the public to achieve high standards of environmental care.
Environmental degradation has serious repercussion for the economy and society EABL has recognized the need to address this by adopting more integrated systems of environmental and energy management.
The launch of Green Goals was marked with the commissioning of the Kshs 250 million effluent treatment plant and a tree planting session by industry captains at the Ruaraka premises.
EABL Group MD Gerald Mahinda told guests that environmental concern had become part of business decision making and just as important as the bottom line.
“We can no longer ignore that protecting the earth has become the most important legacy that we can leave for the future generations. It is not only an excellent thing to do, it also makes good business sense. Recycling and energy management not only reduces our carbon footprint, it also reduces operating costs,” Mahinda said.
“Business leaders across the world have taken up the challenge climate change. We in Kenya can too. By making the right choices through technical innovation, advocacy to our people and commitment confront and do our best to reduce environmental degradation,” Mahinda added.
The EABL Green Goals will bring together all the subsidiaries with an aim to re energize the company’s environmental agenda. The goals will complement the initiatives already in place to reduce, re-use and recycle.
EABL already has an elaborate energy saving agenda and environment that become a way of work with measure in place to ensure targets are met annually.
The Effluent treatment plant constructed in two years ago has capacity to clean all the wastewater from the factories to up to 97% purity before release to the city’s sewerage system.
“At EABL, environmental consciousness has become part of our operations. We have a dedicated environment team dubbed the E Green Team whose mandate is to plant trees across water catchments in the regions. In the past financial year, the team has planted over 40,000 trees in areas such as Ndakaini Dam, Mau, Ngong and Karura Forests,” added Mahinda.
