WATER OF LIFE

EABL Foundation’s Water Of Life Project In Kajiado Commissioned
July 4 2008…Over 60% of community owned boreholes in Kajiado district are not in operation due to poor management by the local people. The area was severely affected by both the 2004 and 2006 famines and the people, who live in communal farms, lost a large number of their livestock, their only source of livelihood.

The EABL Foundation under its Water of Life project, with an investment of Kshs 5.7m partnered with AMREF and the community to rehabilitate four boreholes in the area. The project that began in 2006 is complete and will see more than 5,000 people and their livestock benefit.

Employees of EABL led by EABL Foundation Trustee James Karegi helped lay the foundation of a new tank that will serve as a central water collection point from the boreholes two years ago. The project was officially handed over to the community.

Mr. Karegi said of the project: “I am pleased that we are now able to provide a long term project that will benefit the community and give them hope for the future. Their involvement in every step of the project means there is a feeling of ownership and therefore better care of the facilities we have commissioned today”.

Not only will the community in Kajiado have access to clean water, the EABL Foundation Water of Life project is expected to improve the local community’s health and welfare.

Dr Festus Ilako the Deputy Country Director of AMREF thanked the EABL Foundation for its commitment to helping local communities. “The community in this area have had very poor access to clean water as there are few seasonal rivers and the area is very dry and often effected by drought”

Water is life. There are many communities in East Africa that have no access to clean, safe water.
