WATER OF LIFE

Water for Nzueni, Makueni District
More than 55,000 residents of Nzueni area in Makueni District of Eastern Province are set to gain access to clean water following the launch of a major water project funded by East African Breweries Limited under its Water of Life Programme.

EABL together with its partner Diageo donated Kshs. 5 million to AMREF who will undertake the construction of a borehole in the area. Diageo is a part owner of EABL.

The community in Nzueni have had very poor access to clean water as many water supplies in the area have become polluted, many people had to walk up to 10 km twice a day to collect water from dams which are unprotected and open to pollution. Through the EABL Water of Life project we expect that water borne diseases relating to typhoid, diarrhoea and schistosomiasis, which are prevalent in Nzueni, will decrease.

Under the EABL Water of Life project, AMREF will work with the local community to rehabilitate an existing borehole and install pumping equipment. The borehole will supply water to a distribution tank from where water will flow by gravity to communal water points. The water will be sold to community members at an affordable fee and the revenue generated from the water sales will be managed transparently and used for the operation and maintenance of the water project.

Water is life. There are many communities in East Africa that have no access to clean, safe water.
