WATER OF LIFE

EABL Foundation Funds Two Water Projects
The EABL Foundation has launched two water projects in Eastern province that at a cost Kshs 6 million. The projects in Meru and Mbeere districts will benefit over 30,000 people of Naari Village in Meru and Karaba village in Mbeere.

The projects will involve building of earth dams and a borehole in the dry strip of Karaba in Mbeere. In Meru, gravity flow will direct water tapped from the Kathita River that flows from Mt Kenya to the community homes.

The EABL Foundation, whose target is to make water available for over 300,000 people by the end of this year, donated Ksh2.8 million towards the construction of a water project in the area.

“Easy access to clean water is vital for a community’s health, wealth and sustainability. According to the National Health Sector Strategic Plan of 2004, half of Kenyans do not have access to safe water and sanitation”, said the EABL Foundation Manager Jean Kiarie.

The Naari community has raised funds to help with the piping and will provide labor to bring water to their homes. The area relies purely on rainfall despite its location on a fairly fertile region. Rivers flowing from Mt Kenya have by passed the village and the nearest water source is the Kathita River 27 Kilometers away on the slopes of the mountain.

In Karaba, community members decided on earth dams that will serve a larger community and can be used for irrigation. Several dams will be built in different areas to serve close to 20,000 people in the region with funding from EABL and CDF from the Gachoka constituency.  The project over seen by the Embu Catholic Diocese.
The two projects are part of the EABl Foundation Water of life projects that have benefited over 250,000 people in East Africa over the past two years.
